Today in New Orleans: 8.10.12

Today, the French Film Fest gets underway, burlesque goes to the Super Mario Bros. and Frenchmen gets the blues - twice. On this day in Louisiana history, the highest temperature in state history was recorded in Plain Dealing at 114 degrees (1936), and the state legislature held its shortest session ever of  one hour (1959). Stay out of the heat and make the day long with these:

Jadakiss (Howlin' Wolf, 10:00 p.m.) A one-time Ruff Ryder as a member of the Lox, this East Coast rapper is known for making waves with everyone from Bill O'Reilly to Lil Wayne. But he's got the rhymes to back up the antics, and he's out with "I Love You, The Mixtape" as a sign of recommittment to his fans. Catch him tonight in the Warehouse District.

French Film Fest (Prytania Theatre, 7:30 p.m.) The New Orleans Film Society's annual look at movies direct from L'Hexagone begins tonight with Beloved. Catherine Deneuve and her daughter star in this expansive work that follows the characters over 30 years. It was a hit at Cannes last year, so why not take Uptown next?

Cedric Burnside Project (Blue Nile, 10:00 p.m.) He's the grandson of late, great bluesman R.L. Burnside, and he can play the drums like few others around. Cedric Burnside comes down from the Hill Country once again to show us how to do blues.

Alvin Youngblood Hart's Muscle Theory (d.b.a., 10:00 PM) A big man with a light touch on the guitar, Alvin Youngblood Hart has been making waves for years. The Mississippi native was once described as the Cosmic American Love Child of Howlin' Wolf and Link Wray. Sounds like it's worth a try.

Surf Nazis Must Die (Banks Street Bar, 10:00 PM) Twenty five years ago, Peter George unleashed this film about a grandman on the hunt for revenge against surf punks in the post-apocalyptic future onto the public. Tonight, George celebrates its 25th anniversary in Mid-City.The Bills and the Unnaturals provide the soundtrack.

Boobs and Goombas (Allways Lounge, 10:00 PM) Just when it seemed like there was nothing else to combine with burlesque, there's Nintendo. A nerd's delight is on parade tonight on St. Claude as the seduction of Mario and Luigi plays out on stage.
