Today in New Orleans: 7.28.12Today in New Orleans, Tales of the Cocktail mixes on, it's the last day of the National Urban League Conference, Deep South by Suroeste brings Latinos onscreen and Quintron and Miss Pussycat at One Eyed Jack’s. On this day in history, trumpeter Leon Prima, younger brother of Louis Prima, was born in New Orleans (1907), record producer and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis was born in New Orleans (1965), and blues scholar and ex-White Panther Party chairman John Sinclair was sentenced to 9-10 years in jail for possession of two marijuana cigarettes in Detroit (1969).
Tales of the Cocktail (citywide, all day) The 10th annual festival brings mixologists from around the world to New Orleans for five days of cocktails, cuisine, seminars, tasting rooms, competitions and showcases. Today’s schedule includes Talking Tequila at La Nouvelle Orleans Ballroom in Hotel Monteleone (10:00am-11:30am), New Orleans Cocktail Tour meets in the Lobby of Hotel Monteleone (4:00pm-5:30pm), Grand Tasting at Hyatt Regency (5:30pm-7:30pm), Pernod Absinthe Tasting Room at Bonnet Carre Ballroom in Hotel Monteleone (2:30pm-4:00pm), Spirited Awards 2012 at Hyatt Regency (7:00pm-11:30pm), and tons more.
2012 National Urban League Conference (Morial Convention Center, all day) Today’s schedule includes a Power Walk with Marc, a lecture on the State of Urban Education, an entrepreneurship summit breakfast, a workshop on Small Business Matters, a career and networking fair, the 3rd annual Project Ready college fair, Women of Power Awards luncheon, and Whitney M. Young, Jr. awards gala.
Deep South by Suroeste Screening (Contemporary Arts Center, 6:00pm) Free public screening of seven Spanish and English language short films that focus on the Latino experience in the southwest. The directors whose short films will be shown are Angela Torres (Mexico), Mario Troncoso (Spain), Miguel Alvarez (Texas), Maru Buendia-Sientes (Texas), Sharon Arteaga (Texas), Gabriela Yepez (Peru) and Sergio Carvajal (Venezuela, US). The directors will be there to talk about their films. Doors open at 6:00pm for a reception in SPUN Café. Screening starts at 6:30pm.
Rosé Tasting (Martin Wine Cellar, 3500 Magazine St, 6:30pm-8:00pm) Try 12 carefully selected, summer Rosé wines paired with food from Martin Metairie Deli Bistro for $15. The wines to be sampled range from $13 to $24 per bottle.
River Run Benefit (RiverShack Tavern, 7:00pm) RiverShack Tavern in Jefferson Parish hosts a 2-mile Run/Walk to benefit Angels on Earth Foundation. Registration for the race is $25. T-Shirts will be provided for the racers. After the race at RiverShack Tavern, refreshments include Michelob Ultra Beer, Kentwood Springs Water, CiCi’s Pizza, and Elmer’s Chee Wees. Live music by The Mustard Brothers.
Comedy Fusion Revival (Irish House, 8:30pm-10:30pm) Stand-up comedy hosted by J.D. Sledge, featuring James Cusimano and headliner Cassidy Henehan. $10 for the show. Chef Matt Murphy, who will be on Food Network’s show Chopped on July 31st, will be serving his Irish Gastropub cuisine.
Quintron and Miss Pussycat (One Eyed Jack’s, 10:00pm) Quintron and Miss Pussycat, the married duo behind Morgus’ puppet show and the Drum Buddy, will perform in the Quarter before departing on a Euro tour. Opening bands are Gary Wrong, T-Kettes and The Dropout. $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
