Today in New Orleans: 6.23.12Today, drive down to Des Allemands for Catfish Fest, pig out on a grub crawl in the French Quarter, listen to artist Alexa Kleinbard in a rare walkthrough of her work at Ogden Museum, and show NOLA Pride. On this day in New Orleans history, blues belter Luther Kent (1948), Donald Harrison Jr. (1960) and snare drummer Lumar LeBlanc (1960) were born, and Louis Armstrong had a heart attack in Spoleto, Italy while on tour (1959). Now back to today:

Solar Day (Arabella Station Whole Foods Market, Uptown, 10:00am-2:00pm) Info-packed vendor fair where the leaders and providers of solar energy in southeast Louisiana will talk to guests about how to convert their homes.
Louisiana Catfish Festival (St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Des Allemands, LA, 10:30am-8:00pm) Des Allemands was settled by German immigrants, who brought bringing sausage and the accordion to Louisiana. Big fishing town celebrates da catfish: pay-one-price rides, games, music, 1-mile and 5K road races, a catfish-eating contest, country store, craft booths, plant booths, and catfish every way.
2nd Annual Food Fest & Crawfish Boil (First Pilgrims Church, 1228 Arts Street, 11:00am-4:00pm) Food stations include soul food, Italian, international, western BBQ, seafood and dessert. Adult tickets are $10 which includes 4 food servings. Kids tickets are $5 which include popcorn, hotdogs and snoballs. There’ll also be drink, cotton candy and candy apples.
Gallery Walkthrough with Alexa Kleinbard (Ogden Museum, 11:30am-12:15pm) A rare opportunity to listen to artist Alexa Kleinbard discuss her current exhibition at the Ogden, "Remedies." Based in Tallahassee, Fla., Kleinbard is a self-taught painter, who for more than 30 years has explored folk medicines, scientific advances, the environment and the unsettling role of humans in the balance of nature through her work. In this exhibition of meticulously rendered and richly colored paintings, she has turned her focus to the wild medicinal plants of the Southeast and the endangered wetlands.

A Musical Journey: History of the Music of New Orleans (Nunemaker Hall, Loyola University, 7:00pm) Loyola alumnus and jazz pianist Matt Lemmler ’90 will perform with the New Orleans Jazz Revival Ensembler, featuring guitarist Steve Masakowski, bassist James Singleton, drummer Geoff Clap and trombonist John Mahoney. The concert is free and open to the public.
Arachnoquake Screening Party (Pizza Nola, 7:30pm) Lakeview’s favorite pizza place hosts a screening of the new original SyFy channel flick about mutant spiders invading New Orleans.
An Alien Home Companion & The Titanic Comedy Hour (Allways Lounge and Theatre, 8:00-10:00pm) The Running With Scissors Radio Players will transport you back in time with adaptations of the two cinematic blockbusters – Alien and Titanic – as radio plays. Tickets are $20. |
