Today in New Orleans: 5.12.12

Today, NOLA Veggie Fest sprouts up at the New Orleans Healing Center, an all-you-can-eat crawfish berl peels away at the lakefront, the Big Easy Roller Girls return and Second Saturday art openings arrive again at St. Claude. On this day in Louisiana history, the World's Fair opened in New Orleans (1984) and a new Constitution featured the "Grandfather Clause," which allowed illiterate whites to vote, but also created a poll tax and literacy test designed to disqualify black voters (1898). Now back to the events of the day:

Crawfish Mambo UNO Cove (11:00 AM) It might be raining , but the berl goes on down by the lake. The inaugural Crawfish Mambo will bring together bands, beers and of course, boil, to raise money for UNO. $15 a head, all-you-can-eat. More details here.

NOLA Veggie Fest New Orleans Healing Center (All Day) It's called Veggie Fest, but this one is dedicated to vegans. Two days of cooking demos, burlesque performances, and samples! Need more proof? NoDef's Moxie Sazerac explains why vegans are sexy here.

New Orleans Ladies Arm Wrestling Howlin' Wolf (8:00 PM) New Orleans Ladies Arm Wrestling returns to battle it out for the end of spring with Matriarchal May-hem. See The Second Wave, Pillars of Assault and Grandma Foots square off. It'll be all the same estrogen-fueled competition you love to bribe the ref to see. And this time it's adorned with performances by the Slow Danger Brass Band. And place your bets now, all proceeds go to Covenant House.

Second Saturday St Claude Ave (6-10 p.m.) On the second Sabado of every month, St. Claude transforms into gallery row as art openings are all over the Bywater end of the Avenue. Check the listings for all of the Second Saturday openings here.

Herbsaint Birthday Party Sazerac Bar1:30 p.m. In honor of the birthday of Herbsaint creator J. Marion Legendre, the Roosevelt Hotel's Sazerac Bar is hosting an afternoon soiree complete with Herbsaint Frappes. And, there will be cake.

Astral Project Snug Harbor (8&10 PM) One of the best progressive jazz quintets in town is set to touch down on Frenchmen tonight. This group features Tony Dagradi on sax, the legendary Steve Masakowski on guitar, James Singleton on bass, Johnny Vidacovich on drums, David Torkanowsky on keys.

Big Easy Roller Girls UNO Human Performance Center (7:00 PM) After a few weeks of training, our local Roller Derby all-stars return for a home bout against Memphis. Conveniently located just a few steps from Crawfish Mambo, this is going to be a doozy. Full preview here.

UMBRELLA AISLE:  Due to rain, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra's Champions Square performance with Kermit Ruffins was moved to Sunday, and the Tour de Lis was postponed until June 16. The Night Market, which was slated to take place adjacent to Second Saturday at 2709 St. Claude Ave., has also been postponed a week.
