Today in New Orleans: 5.11.12

Today in New Orleans, bands representing David Simon's TV shows lock horns in an epic battle, Breakfast at Tiffany's spreads out at the NOMA Sculpture Garden and a pair of popular locals return downtown. On this day in New Orleans history, a fire destroyed the top floor of the Cabildo (1988), first-wave jazz pioneer King Oliver was born (1885). Now back to today's action:

The Wire v. Treme Battle of the Bands Tipitina's (10:00 PM) New Orleans and Baltimore bands such as Galactic, Stooges Brass Band and Lafayette Gilchrist and the New Volcanoes battle it out for Simon Supremacy. The hype has reached fever pitch on the Twitter. Tonight, they'll settle it on the stage. More details on this fight for Standing here.

Eyehategod One Eyed Jack's (10:00 PM) Sludge metal isn't on the calendar these days as much as true heads would like. But a gig from Eyehategod is a chance to see the slowed-down stoner metal chug out of some of its original sources. Bring earplugs, or not.

Breakfast at Tiffany's NOMA Sculpture Garden (7:30 PM) Cozy up next to LOVE, or spread out under the spider. NOMA provides yet another chance to laze about in the sculpture garden while watching some classic film with this visit from Holly Golightly. And, there will be corn. $6 admission.

Red Stick Ramblers d.b.a. (10:00 PM) Cajun Friday rears its head again on Frenchmen with these old-timey Cajun-loving kids. Fresh off a scintillating set at Jazzfest, Red Stick Ramblers don't limit themselves to traditional Cajun influences only, but the accordion-fiddle style weighs heavily in their music. Prepare to find a partner and kick up some floorboards.
