Today in New Orleans 10.12.12

Tonight, see the famed Placido Domingo at the Opera with the Philharmonic Orchestra, see some blues for free at the Crescent City BBQ Festival, and get crazy on Elysian Fields with the Spectacular! Cabaret for the weekend’s Endless Gaycation. Happy Birthday to James “Sugar Boy” Crawford, born October 12, 1934. Crawford is known for his hit, “Jock-A-Mo,” popularized by the Dixie Cups as “Iko Iko.” Now, for more on today’s events.

Placido Domingo (Mahalia Jackson Theatre, 7pm)

Don’t miss the legendary Placido Domingo tonight at Mahalia Jackson. Domingo has been performing with the New Orleans Orchestra for fifty years now, and he’s keeping the tradition alive tonight with accompaniment from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival (Lafayette Square, 5:30pm)

Tonight’s free festival kicks off with Luther Kent & Trick Bag until 6:30pm, followed by Chris Thomas King. Come hungry and support local food vendors. Proceeds from the festival support the Jazz and Heritage Foundation’s programs.

Spectacular! Spectacular! A Cabaret for All (John Paul’s, 10pm)

Come out for one of Endless Gaycation’s Friday night events on Elysian Fields. Drag performers, Burlesque artists, and even clowns will fill the stage with glitter and sex appeal. Come out all weekend, all over the city, and celebrate New Orleans’ queer community!

101 Runners (Tipitina’s, 10pm)

Tip’s on Tchoup tonight is bringing the funk with Alvin Youngblood Hart. For just $12, see authentic New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Blues and Funk. Doors open at 9pm.
