Today in New Orleans: 9.29.12

Today, LSU takes on Towson, a run and a concert raise money to restore Professor Longhair's house, the New Orleans Suspects continue recording their new live album and Lindy Hop Fest continues. On this day in Louisiana history, a major hurricane hit Louisiana, killing 275 (1915), and Rock n Roll innovator Jerry Lee Lewis was born in Ferriday (1935). Here's the rest of the roster for this Saturday:

LSU v. Towson (Tiger Stadium, 6 p.m.) After a rough road trip, the Tigers return home for a date with Towson State. Les' Miles' men (and the Mett-stache) will be looking to make their final adjustments before a trip to The Swamp for a battle with the Florida Gators next weekend. Read Chris Rinaldi's preview here.

Tip's 5k and House Party New Orleans Style (Tipitina's, All Day) In the morning, a 5K run full of brass bands, costumes and more takes to the streets. Later, join George Porter Jr and the Tipitina's All-Stars, Dr. John, Ellis Marsalis, and more as they rally to renovate and preserve the family home of Professor Longhair. Sponsored by WWL-TV 4 and Sader Power, the event is surely not one to miss. General admission gets you in, but VIPs get upstairs balcony access, limited seating, food, an open top shelf bar, show poster, and Tipitina's Goodie Bag. Doors open at 8pm. Get their early and don't forget to enjoy Fess' signature drink, the “Rum and Cola.” Read the full preview here.

New Orleans Suspects CD Party (Maple Leaf, 10:00 PM) The New Orleans Suspects are recording a live CD at Riverbend's favorite live music haunt. The band, which features vets of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Radiators and Mean Willie Green of the Neville Brothers, closes out their live session tonight. Read more about it here.

Black and White and Read All Over: A Celebration of the Daily Times-Picayune (Howlin' Wolf, 8:00 PM) As Da Paper begins its thrice-a-week publishing schedule, staffers past and present gather to remember the glory days of a daily paper, and raise money for the employees who were recently fired. Read all about it here.

Lindy Hop Festival (French Market, All Day) The New Orleans Swing Dance Festival returns this weekend with its showcase event, the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown set to jive today. Read the full preview here.

Timecode NOLA Film Fest (Various locations, 7 p.m. - til) From slice-of-life films to Timecode's original picture Where Y'at, see what New Orleans' up-and-coming filmmakers have been up to in this first-ever film fest. Details here.

Animal Collective (House of Blues, 8pm) Another band touring in support of a new album is the experimental-as-hell Animal Collective. Their Centipede Hz-inspired tour has brought strange stage set-ups, a cornucopia of lights, and everyone's favorite pseudonym'd quartet. They'll be joined by Micachu and the Shapes, an experimental trio whose frontwoman makes her own instruments. Let the creativity flow. - April Siese

NOLA Theatre! (Various Stages) The New Orleans theatre community continues to run wild across town tonight. It's Balm in Gilead's closing weekend, and Jesus Christ Superstar's opener. Plus a whole lot more!

NOLA Downtown Music and Arts Festival (Lafayette Square and beyond, All Day) In coordination with the Cutting Edge Music Conference, this fest showcases local bands from across genres. Check out the lineup here.
