Defender Picks

Today in New Orleans 4.18.13

Enjoy some Jazz in Armstrong Park, rock the CASA to end child abuse, and enjoy some art after hours at the Ogden Museum. On this day in 1864, the Battle of Sabine Pass took place in Cameron Parish. Now, more to do this Thursday.

Jazz in the Park: Flow Tribe, James Andrews (Armstrong Park, 3pm-8pm)

Trumpeter extraordinaire Andrews is kicking off the spring series, and Flow Tribe is bringing the funk rock. Proceeds support New Orleans’ most historic park and help fund programs for kids in the city.

Rock the CASA: Night Out Against Child Abuse (Howlin’ Wolf, 8pm)

Mia Borders, Amanda Shaw, The Breton Sound, and the Fake Carls are taking to the stage tonight to help support kids in need. CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, is raising money to continue their programs to advocate for abused and neglected children. The show kicks off at 9pm.

Ogden After Hours: Tate Moore and Dave Woolworth (Ogden Museum, 6pm-8pm)

As you enjoy some of the Ogden’s latest exhibitions, enjoy Moore on the acoustic guitar, and Woolworth on the bass. The pair has been playing together for 19 years, spanning genres from roots to “funktry” and musical ensembles from Kudzu Kings to Tate Moore and the Cosmic Door. Tickets are $10.

Thursdays at Twilight: John Boutte (City Park’s Botanical Garden, 6pm-8pm)

Boutte was voted Best Male Vocalist at both the Best of the Beat as well as the Big Easy Awards. Come see the soulful singer tonight in the Pavilion of the Two Sisters. No outside food or drink is allowed, and they’ll be selling mint juleps, wine, beer, soft drinks, water, and food. Tickets are $10.
