Today in New Orleans: 5.25.12Today, Festin' goes Greek, KD Lang and the Siss Boom Bang play the Mahailia Jackson Theatre and chamber music sidles up to the Piazza. On this day in New Orleans history, banjo player "Creole" George Guenson (1907) and R&B singer Donnie Elbert (1934) were born, and R&B singer Roy Brown died (1981). Now, here's more about these pre-Memorial Day offerings:
NOLA Greek Fest (Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 5:00 p.m.) There are no austerity measures by the Bayou tonight! The annual hedonistic Hellenic party gets cranking tonight where Robert E. Lee Blvd. meets Bayou St. John. Look for authentic cuisine, a Greek marketplace, and of course - the bouzouki!
Birdfoot Festival's Party at the Piazza (Piazza d'Italia, 5:00 p.m.) The inaugural edition of New Orleans' own chamber music festival makes happy hour a little happier out at the Piazza d'Italia tonight. elections include duos by Béla Bartók, Brahms' Hungarian Dances for piano four-hands, excerpts of Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, and Antonín Dvorák’s String Serenade in E major. Food and drink will be sold. $10 admission.
KD Lang and the Siss Boom Bang (Mahalia Jackson Theatre, 8:00 p.m.) One of Canadian music's original imports has joined up with a new band to belt out her country-tinged pop. Tickets are still available!
The Malone Brothers (Chickie Wah Wah, 8:00 p.m.) These brothers used to play prominent roles in the Radiators and the Subdudes. Now they play together, and they shred. Head on over to Mid-City for some NOLA-fried rock 'n roll.
Honorable South (Allways Lounge, 10:00 p.m.) One of the most unique combos working in New Orleans today, Honorable South combines hip-hop's soulful side with the party-starting side of indie rock. See it for yourself on St. Claude tonight.
New Orleans Food and Wine Experience Today at NOFWE, explore Beaujolais, Rose, and burgers 'n burgundy. Full details of today's happenings here.
NOLA Theatre Remeber that handful of spring plays Jim Fitzmorris was telling us about? Well all five are open as of tonight! Tonight's schedule features Cripple Creek's Lysistrata at Allways Theatre, plus it's the last night to see As You Like it in the NOMA Sculpture Garden, Psycho Beach Party at Mid-City Theatre, Shirley Valentine at the CAC. And don't forget about skating over to see the Best Bank's current delight, Xanadu. |
