Today in New Orleans 5.3.13

If you leave the Fest early this Friday, head to Octavia Books and hear Augusten Burroughs, or take the kids to New Orleans’ Giant Puppet Festival. On this day in 1995, the Neville Brothers, the Dixie Cups, Allen Toussaint, and Professor Longhair were inducted into the New Orleans Musical Walk of Fame. Now, more to do this rainy JazzFest Friday. Stay with NoDef for complete after dark events coverage.

JazzFest (Fairgrounds, 11am-7pm)

The second weekend of the festival continues, rain or shine. Tonight, Maroon 5, Willie Nelson, and the Stooges Brass Band are headlining. All day long, catch local favorites like The Iguanas and Papa Grows Funk.

Augusten Burroughs Author Event (Octavia Books, 6pm)

The author of Running with Scissors applied his dark humor to a self help book, This is How: Surviving What You Think You Can’t. Come hear Burroughs discuss his latest work, and hang out for a book signing afterwards.

New Orleans Giant Puppet Festival (Marigny Opera House, Mudlark Public Theatre, 7pm & 10pm)

Bring the kids to tonight’s Giant Puppet Festival on St. Ferdinand. See Toybox Theatre and Cripps Puppets present Billy the Liar and the Werewolves on the Moon. Later at the Mudlark’s adults-only portion of the fest, see the same company’s production of A View from the Wham Bam Puppet Slam. Tickets are $20.

Royal Southern Brotherhood (City Park’s Botanical Gardens, 6pm)

Head to the Robert B. Haspel Garden Stage for this evening’s outside concert. Chris Mule & The Perpetrators are also doing a set, presented by the Backbeat Foundation. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $10. Food and drink can be purchased inside the event.
