Today in New Orleans 4.23.13

This morning, head to the Uptown Farmers Market in the Riverbend for fresh grub. Later, the Soul Rebels play in the Ninth Ward, and more. On this day in 1999, the 30th Jazz Fest kicked off with a lineup that included Willie Nelson, Corey Harris, and Carol Fran. Now, more to do this Tuesday.

Soul to Soul Screening (Antenna Gallery, 7pm)

As a part of her free Musically Speaking series, DJ Soul Sister, WWOZ, Press Street, and the Charitable Film Network present this documentary, created in 1971 by Denis Sanders. Artists such as Wilson Pickett, Ike and Tina Turner, Santana, the Staple Singers, Willie Bobo, and more traveled to Ghana that year to celebrate the country’s 14th year of independence with 14 hours of music. Seating is limited.

The Soul Rebels (Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, 6:30pm)

They’ve been touring like crazy, but the Soul Rebels are kicking off their Jazz Fest week in their favorite city. Come get down in the Musician’s Village tonight, and jam with one of the Big Easy’s best in brass.

Crescent City Farmers Market (Uptown Market, 9am-1pm)

Get out of bed and make groceries in the Riverbend this morning. Located near River Road and Broadway, the CCFM’s Uptown Market offers shoppers fresh produce, seafood, pre-made delights, and more every Tuesday. Choose from dozens of vendors that come from all over Louisiana.

Marc Stone (Little Gem Saloon, 7:45pm)

Quench your thirst at Happy Hour with Charlie Miller, and stick around for some acoustic roots and Delta blues from the local performer. Little Gem, the latest addition to the CBD offers, Jazz and Creole cuisine every night.

Correction: Nicholas Payton is not scheduled for Tulane today.
