Today in New Orleans 6.25.13

Tonight, a book signing with local author Beverly Bell at Casa Borrega! DJ Soul Sister’s ‘Musically Speaking’ film series continues, food trucks roll through the Bywater, and Albinas Prizgintas plays his weekly classical music gig at Trinity Episcopal. On this day in 1868, Louisiana and a number of other southern states were readmitted into the United States after the Civil War. Now, more to do this Tuesday.

Beverly Bell Author Event (Casa Borrega, 7pm)

New Orleans native and author of Fault Lines: Views Across Haiti’s Divide, will be joined by Patricia Florvilus, leading human rights activist and lawyer from Haiti. Fault Lines explores Haiti’s first year after the tragic earthquake, and Bell weaves in post-Katrina narratives of rebirth and reconstruction. Come hear the pair speak, and bring a copy of Bell’s book to be signed. The event is taking place at Casa Borrega (1719 Oretha Castle Haley), Central City’s newest community center, music venue, and soon-to-be restaurant!

Albinas Prizgintas, (Trinity Episcopal Church, 6pm)

The Julliard graduate has not missed a Tuesday performance since Katrina. Come enjoy classical organ music from one of the city’s most talented artists. Prizgintas has called his weekly gigs “shows full of mystery.”

Shining Stars (Antenna Gallery, 7pm)

DJ Soul Sister is back this week, hosting and curating her film series “Musically Speaking.” Tonight’s film explores the band Earth, Wind, and Fire, and the ways they incorporated their church backgrounds into their funk, psychedelic, and rock performances.

Rolling Through: Bywater (NOCCA, 5pm-9pm)

Tonight, the mobile food festival closes out a successful run through Broadmoor, the Bayou Treme, Central City, and the Bywater. Enjoy food from seven trucks, including Empanada Intifada, Frencheeze, Food Drunk, and more. Old New Orleans Rum will provide the drinks.

Crescent City Farmer's Market (Uptown Market, 9am-1pm)

All morning, shop for the freshest local groceries and enjoy pre made treats from local chefs and grocers. Find everything from poultry, to fresh produce, to gourmet fruit bars, and more at the Riverbend.
