Tar Mat Troubles Force Closure Along La. Shore The closed area Isaac may have rolled out the tar mat. On Tuesday, the state announced it was closing a dozen-mile area of coastline between Port Fourchon and Elmer's Island because a new tar mat has emerged in the Gulf of Mexico, and a "large concentration" of tar balls are washing up on the beach. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries didn't pin the oil to the Deepwater Horizon and BP, but said it will test the petrol to determine the source.
Commercial and recreational fishing in the area is prohibited one mile out into the Gulf while the shore is closed, except for angling, according to a statement.
The area has been no stranger to tarballs in the time after the Big Oozy. Prior to Hurricane Isaac's landfall last week, the state suspended cleanup operations - which have remained ongoing.
Elmer's Island, which sits at the western edge of the closed swath of land, was one of the primary oiled areas as the crude from the Macondo well washed toward shore.
The U.S. Coast Guard received 90 reports of new pollution in the wake of Hurricane Isaac, and have found at least five oiled birds, including a dead juvenile pelican. |
