Tales of the Cocktail Kickoff Scales the Heights for Pisco

by Mary-Devon Dupuy

If you’re looking for a way to tolerate the midday heat, head to the Rooftop Pool at the Hotel Monteleone (214 Royal St.) today for Tales of the Cocktail’s official kickoff party. Portón, an ultra-premium Peruvian pisco, is putting on this year’s “Glacial Masquerade,” from 1-4pm, and everyone is invited to celebrate TOTC’s tenth birthday.

Guests are encouraged to wear masks for the celebration, which will include authentic Peruvian food and drink. The theme for the masquerade is based on one of the world’s most daring traditions—every year, thousands climb the Ausangate Mountains in the Andes to celebrate the bountiful waters of the Peruvian Glacier. Merrymakers don masks, dance, and drink at an elevation of 20,945 ft.

Although the drinks today will be served below sea level, they’ll still pack a punch. They’ll feature a “Button Punch,” made with five bottles of Pisco Porton, one bottle of John D. Taylor Velvet Falernum, and a long list of fresh fruits such as lemons, pineapples, and oranges. The other two artisanal cocktails are appropriately named, “The Altitude,” and the “Portonero.”

Portón Master Distiller Johnny Schuler is the event’s host, and he’s excited to share some of his favorite cocktail treats with the Crescent City. "This is our way to celebrate the bartending community and fans of the brand with a bit of Peruvian flair at one of the most renowned cocktail gatherings in the world," Schuler said.

Tales of the Cocktail Co-owner Paul G. Tuennerman is excited about this year's venue. "We're very excited about this opportunity to showcase the newly renovated Hotel Monteleone, during our 10th anniversary," he said.
