Today in New Orleans 5.8.13

Today, a free show from Dumpstaphunk, Much Ado About Nothing opens at NOMA’s Sculpture Garden, and more. On this day in 1541, Spanish explorer DeSoto discovered the Mississippi River. Now, more hump day happenings.

Much Ado About Nothing (NOMA, 5pm)

Come to NOMA’s Sculpture Garden for the NOLA Project’s opening production of the classic play, directed by Jason Kirkpatrick. Benedick and Beatrice will provide the comedy,  which will include slapstick, dancing, music, and poetry. General admission is $18, $12 for NOMA members and children, as well as students with ID’s.

Weekly Wednesdays at Art Klub (Michalopolous Studio, 12pm-10pm)

All day long, head to Elysian Fields and enjoy music from Bodhi3 at 4:30pm, refreshments, plus free space to work and collaborate with other creative people. Reese Johanson’s collective opens their doors every Wednesday, and starting at 7pm, there’s a film screening of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. There’s a suggested donation of $5, and it’s free for members.

Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk + Mahayla (Lafayette Square, 5pm-8pm)

This week’s Wednesday at the Square series features some of New Orleans’ best in funk. The concert is free, but come hungry. Dozens of local vendors will have booths set up, and Abita provides the beer. Sales help support the Young Leadership Council of New Orleans.

EyeHateGod, The Sluts (Siberia, 9pm)

Since 1988, EyeHateGod has become one of New Orleans’ most well known metal bands. DJ’s Penetrol and Jordan are hosting tonight’s benefit for parasite skate pa. Also playing, The Bastard Sons of Marvin Hirsch.
