Today in New Orleans: 7.20.12Today, we dance in the streets again for Uncle Lionel Batiste to rest with a proper jazz funeral. Also, the opening night of Jim Fitzmorris’ “Urban Education Smackdown” at the Shadowbox Theatre, and the outdoor premier of the Ross Brothers’ film Tchoupitoulas at the Old U.S. Mint. On this day in history, vocalist Brazella Briscoe of the Zion Harmonizers was born in New Orleans (1948), and rapper Juvenile was arrested at his Mandeville home for 3 counts of simple battery and 5 counts of aggravated assault after bringing five dancers home for his housewarming party (2000).
Uncle Lionel Batiste’s Jazz Funeral (Mahalia Jackson Theatre, 11:00am) Today, we lay the man to rest. Viewing at 9:00am, service at 11:00am, then jazz funeral procession starting in Louis Armstrong Park. After the jazz procession, Mount Olivet Cemetery is where the New Orleans legend will lie in peace.
The George French Band (Carousel Lounge, Monteleone Hotel, 5:00pm-8:00pm) George French is a legend, and has been featured on many New Orleans musicians’ records released throughout the 1960s. Tonight in the French Quarter, George French on bass, Ellen Smith on vocals, Eric Traub on sax, Todd Duke on guitar, Mike Lemmler on piano and George French’s son, Gerald French, on drums.
Urban Education Smackdown (Shadowbox Theatre, 8:00pm) Opening night of Jim Fitzmorris’ one-man show. “Climbing into the ring against the public education system, Fitzmorris takes on all comers including NPR Democrats, Creationist Republicans, razor wielding students, confrontational parents, and in the main event of the evening, the hall monitor himself: Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.”
Tchoupitoulas (Old U.S. Mint, 8:30pm) Outdoor premier of Bill and Turner Ross’ new NOLA-shot film about three young brothers from the West Bank, one night in the French Quarter, and all the sounds and people they encounter. Produced by the same guys (Court 13) behind Beasts of the Southern Wild. The film was partially funded through kickstarter to get the allegedly amazing soundtrack approved. |
