Swamp Thing: NBC Green-lights NOLA-Set Marching Band Comedy

by Jillian Firnhaber

Although Treme's time on the tube may be limited, fear not! Among NBC's newly announced pilots is a show tentatively titled The Swamp, focused on a college scramble-style marching band, and set in New Orleans. Likely a response to Fox's hit show Glee, The Swamp will blend light-hearted comedy with musical numbers. Named for the house in which the band resides, NBC has remained relatively mum on the green-lit pilot, only saying that the kids' “unlikely mentor” will be a key point of the show.

Lawrence Jackson is occupied with Southern’s Human Jukebox; so, a different director was found. Showrunner Tom Brady, best known for directing Rob Schneider in The Hot Chick, despite being a Harvard alumnus, will helm the production. Much of Brady's previous television experience came in the form of animated comedy. He's penned several episodes of The Simpsons, and was an executive producer on the well received, but short-lived MTV series Good Vibes. He most recently directed the Adam Sandler produced Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, which holds a rare 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for six Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture of the Year. Time will tell if Brady can turn The Swamp into the next television sensation or if he will remain out of step.

NBC has yet to set a time-line for The Swamp's release, and no details about whether the show will be shot on location in NOLA have been provided.
