Suit Up for Super Sunday

Details & Routes to See Mardi Gras Indians

Mardi Gras Indians only don their suits three times a year. The first is obviously Mardi Gras, the second is St. Joseph’s Day, and the third is a massive meeting of the tribes known as Super Sunday. This year, St. Joseph’s Day coincides with the annual event held by the Mardi Gras Indian Council on the third Sunday of March, so expect celebrations to be bigger and better than ever for 2017.

Super Sunday 2017 is dedicated to the memories of Big Chief Bo Dollis, Sr. of the Wild Magnolias (who passed away in January 2015), Big Chief Larry Bannock of the Golden Star Hunters (who died in June 2014), and gospel singer Jo Cool Davis (who passed in August 2016).

The fête begins at 11AM this Sunday (3.19). As always, it will be held at A.L. Davis Park. The parade is scheduled to follow at 1PM.

Music will be provided by the Hot 8 Brass Band, Young Pinstripe Brass Band, D.J. Captain Charles, Big Al Carson, D.J. Jubilee, Dave Lemon, To Be Continued Brass Band, and B.R.W. Singing Group.

Some additional strutting will be offered by groups including the Young Men Oympians and the Lady Buckjumpers.

Council Chief Howard Miller announced that the Super Sunday 2017 Trail/Parade Route will begin on Washington Ave. and LaSalle St. From there the procession moves on to Simon Bolivar Ave.; turns left onto Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.; turns left onto Claiborne Ave.; turns left onto Washington Ave.; and then ends back at A.L. Davis Park.
