Street LevelTrio of Carnival Marching Groups Step Out with Balls This Weekend Pussyfooters (via NOLAmite)  610 Stompers 610 Stompers, Pussyfooters, Camel Toe Lady Steppers all host parties.
The Mardi Gras season is upon us, and the time has come to dust off your prom attire, 80’s headbands, assorted costume apparel, and head to a ball.
Doesn't sound like Rex dress? Well, that's no mistake. Thankfully, many of the city’s premier walking clubs not only invite us to their parties, they let us wear what we wanna. They've done the party planning for us. This weekend, a trifecta of balls serves as each marching group's official coming out for the season, and helps them raise money, because all that struttin' ain't for free. But leave the hurricane money stashed away. These parties won't cost a small fortune.
The 610 Stompers, the walking club that has gained national notoriety by walking in the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade and appearing on the Tonight Show, will be putting on their short shorts, fluffed red jackets, and tube socks to host their annual Sweet Debutante Ball, the Electric Boogaloo, this Friday January 27th, at the Sugar Mill.
On site will be DJ Hammer and food from many local restaurants including Drago’s, Acme Oyster House, and Squeal BBQ. The Stompers will, as always, put on a performance to prove that “ordinary men can have extraordinary moves”. This will be their official coming out for the season and a preview of what can be expected when they roll with the Krewe of Muses, Krewe of Thoth, and Krewe of Orpheus parades. Tickets are $40 and can be found on the Stompers website, www.610stompers.com. All proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
If hairy legs don’t quite do it for you, there are always camel toes. That is, the Camel Toe Lady Steppers, a walking club that was born out of a humorous costume choice on Halloween in 2003, and has since grown to over 50 young woman. After being approached by the Krewe of Muses, they made their carnival debut in 2004 and have been strutting their stuff ever since. Their eighth annual fundraiser, “The Best Little Toedown in NOLA”, will be at Tipitina’s on Friday January 27th. Featuring an exclusive performance by the Steppers themselves, the event will also host the New Orleans Bingo! Show, The Local Skank, Fleur De Tease, The Mystic Ponies, and Jamie Bird. There will also be a Not-so-silent Auction, Raffle, Fo-Toe Booth, and many special guests. Tickets are $20 and all proceeds will benefit The Roots of Music program.
Also steppin’ out for a good cause this weekend will be the Pussyfooters Marching Krewe. The Pussyfooters are a group of over 80 women that strive to nurture and empower women of all shapes and sizes by injecting some femininity into the second line scene. Countering the more traditional masculinity of brass second lines, this group of woman, all over the age of 30, march in pink and orange corsets and Doc Marten boots, with varied flair thrown in for individuality.
Before marching with the Krewe of Muses and the Krewe of Thoth, they will be giving a carnival preview this weekend at the Blush Ball 2012, “Party with a Purpose!” on Saturday January 28th at The Foundry, on 333 St. Joseph Street. Entertainment will include Big Sam’s Funky Nation, DJ Brice Nice, emcee Trixie Minx, and performances by Miss Claudia and the Pussyfooters. There will also be a raffle, and all proceeds from the event will go to the Metro Center for Women and Children (METRO). Tickets are $30 in advance, and can be bought online at www.pussyfooters.net, from Fleurty Girl (3117 Magazine St.) and at Miss Claudia's Vintage Clothing & Costumes (4204 Magazine St.). You can also purchase a ticket for $40 at the door.  ’)
