Pontchartrain Blue Crab's Gary Bauer learned that this extends to processors, too. Bauer allegedly hid the fact that his Slidell company didn't report buying about 285,000 pounds of seafood from January 2010 - July 2011. The 54-year-old turned himself in last week, and was charged on 18 counts of filing false public records and 18 counts of injuring public records, according to the state Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries. According to the state, the breakdown on Bauer's alleged secret stash is as follows: 170,215 pounds of blue crab, 104,489 pounds of shrimp, 8,564 soft shell crab, 2,122 pounds of sheepshead, five pounds of flounder and 113 pounds of black drum. Bauer's purhcases were discovered when the Department inspected "trip tickets" collected from commercial fishers that show each seafood transaction. The Department reviews the tickets so they can properly show "the important role the state of Louisiana plays in the production of seafood and the management of the state's seafood resources," the news release said. The charges could bring up to five years in prison with or without hard labor, or up to a $5,000 fine for each count.
