State of the SEC Address is Todayby Shay Sokol We're still more than a month away from Southeastern Conference Football (and 45 days from the LSU Tiger Sons' first kickoff). So in the absence of the players' performances doing the talking, words will have to suffice. Days after Mike Slive told the Associated Press that he plans to renew his contract (set to expire July 31) to remain as commissioner of the SEC for “a couple of more years,” Silve will give his annual “State of the SEC” address at 12:30 p.m. today at the Wynfrey Hotel ballroom in Birmingham, Ala.
The annual Media Days event brings coaches and players from each of the SEC member schools to Birmingham, Alabama, where the SEC is headquartered. The 3-day event (July 17-19) will stream live on SEC’s website.
The 71-year-old commissioner has helmed the SEC for ten years, which is the most successful conference in the nation for its large revenue distribution for its member schools (an average $20.1 million went to each of the 12 member schools last season) and six consecutive national championships.
In his “State of the SEC” speech last year, Slive’s major announcement was to expect a 13-team league in the 2012-2013 season, after Texas A&M applied to join the SEC conference.
In his speech today, Slive will most likely talk up the inclusion of Texas A&M and Missouri into his exclusive club, making the SEC a 14-team league. He might update the public on negotiations with ESPN and CBS for renewed TV contracts – the SEC’s main moneymaker. Also likely on the agenda: the reformed four-team playoff, which will take effect in 2013. Since they were so often the beneficiary of the BCS system, SEC is about the only conference that will potentially lose out from the new playoff system. Look for Slive to respond to those early rumblings.
Oh, and since he's commissioner of the SEC he'll probably talk about other sports, too.
Correction: This article originally stated Mike Slive will deliver his "State of the SEC" speech at 3:00pm. It will be delivered at 12:30pm. |
