State of Play: This Weekend in New Orleans Theatre


 

This week in New Orleans theater,the them seems to be song. The child-friendly musical Frecklface Strawberry plays at The Rivertown Theaters. And Louis Prima and The Beatles are stars of the shows at the Stage Door Canteen and The Rivertown Theaters, respectively. Over at The Shadowbox Theatre, radio is taken to the stage with The Clifton Monroe Chronicles and Jose Torres-Tama one again covers Latino immigration social issues with Aliens, Immigrants, and Other Evildoers.

 

Aliens, Immigrants, and Other Evildoers
Jose Torres-Tama kicks off his fall tour with this one man show. He addresses issues pertaining to Latino immigrants, playing different "aliens." The Shadowbox Theatre, 2400 St. Claude Ave. 10/11-10/15 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10, $7 for students.

 

Freckleface Strawberry: The Musical

 

This kid-friendly musical kicks off The Rivertown Theater Childrens' Series. It is based off a book by Julianne Moore and is about a young girl and what she faces as red-haired, freckle-face child. The Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts (Lagniappe Stage), 325 Minor St. 10/12 at 7:30 p.m., 10/13 at 11 a.m., 10/14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for children. Jump, Jive and Wail: The Music of Louis Prima
Louis Prima is brought back to the stage with this cast of 10 people. Classic hits will be performed, such as 'Sing! Sing! Sing!,' 'Just a Gigolo,'  and 'Basin Street Blues.' Stage Door Canteen at the WWII Museum, 945 Magazine St. 10/12-10/13 at 8 p.m. 10/14 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $30 for evening show only; $60 for evening show with dinner, seating at 6 ($50 for children under 12); $55 for Sunday brunch, seating at 11:30 a.m. ($45 for children under 12). The Beatles: Love, Love, Love (yeah, yeah, yeah!)
This evening cabaret returns to Kenner for songs by, you guessed it, the Beatles. Join in on the classic hits, with Amy Alvarez and Butch Claire performing. The Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts, 325 Minor St. 10/13 at 7:30 p.m. 10/14 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25. (504) 461-9475.

The Clifton Monroe Chronicles
The Clifton Monroe Chronicles is a radio show brought to the audience in the form of a play. Clifton Monroe is a reporter on the prowl in New Orleans for the biggest headlines, joined by his sidekick Mattie. This week's episode is The Case of the Murderous Mister. The Shadowbox Theatre, 2400 St. Claude Ave. 10/11-10/14 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for students; "Sidekick Special" is two tickets for $20.
