Art Openings and Shows in NOLAin the Crescent City from Julia to St. Claude State of the Art July 10-17Not only is it the second Saturday in July this weekend, it’s also time for Frenchies in the Crescent City to get in touch with their roots. This Bastille Day, don your beret and check out St. Claude for new art from UNO’s MFA students and paintings from Peter Ladetto at Byrdie’s. Friday the 13th, NOMA will be going European with opera, cheese, the beloved Leah Chase, and guest artist Gustave Blache III.

NOMA's Where Y'art?! NOMA is celebrating Bastille Day this Friday the 13th with art, opera, and best of all, cheese. At 5:30, Guests can enjoy a taste of the Paris Opera House with The New Orleans Opera Association performing selections from Phantom of the Opera. Gustave Blache III will be signing copies of his book, Leah Chase: Paintings by Gustave Blache III, and at 7pm, enjoy edible art with Creole Cream Cheese, Mozzarella, and Ricotta: Chris Montero and the famous Chef Leah Chase making a guest appearance. Dining reservations are requested.

Arthur Roger, 432 Julia St. “Rings of Granite,” an exhibition from Jesus Morales. Opening June 2. Morales is recognized as one of the greatest sculptors working in granite today. The artist works with materials such as Texas Pink, Black, Dakota, and Fredericksburg to create his unique sculptures that will be on view through July 14.

Callan Contemporary 240 Chartres St. Jose-Maria Cundin presents Opus Concava on June 1. Cundin has referred to his oil paintings on wood-panel as “portraits, pseudo-portraits, echograms, and ectoplasm imagery.” The artist’s work will be on view through July 25.

Cole Pratt Gallery, 3800 Magazine St. Artist Katie Rafferty presents, About a Line, on June 2. The opening reception will last from 5:30-8pm. Rafferty’s mixed media monotypes and canvas works explore the many manifestations of “the line.” The exhibition will be on view through the month of June.

Guthrie Contemporary Gallery, 3815 Magazine St. DeeDee Morrison’s “Charmed” uses heavy industrial metals, laser get cutting methods and botanical inspired designs to create solar-powered, sustainable sculptures.
The Front, 4100 St. Claude Jan Gilbert presents 30 Years/30 Blocks, an installation-book retrospective installation that explores three decades of place and public artwork. Gilbert and artist Babette Billbeau will also be introducing their Cajun Prayer Flags, a project that blends Tibetan, Japanese, and Cajun cultural traditions. Passersby will be able to write their own special intentions on the flags. Opening reception June 9, 6-10pm. On view through July 8.

Martine Chaisson Gallery, 727 Camp St In “Parallel,” JT Blatty’s photographs explore the symmetry between the fossil and the human form, by combining portions of the human figure juxtaposed with fossils she has collected over the years. The exhibition will also include a separate display of fossils from the images. Opening reception is on Saturday, May 5 from 6-9pm.
