Sinkhole Saga Update: New Earthquake, Public Health Dangers in Assumption ParishThough the source of the Assumption Parish sinkhole is now established, the ground continues to shake and dangers to the health of the community are still being discovered. Last week, the area around Bayou Corne felt new tremors as an earthquake sprang up from the deep. The Tuesday, Oct. 23, event occurred 1,500 ft. below the surface, according to information released this morning by Dr. Gary Hecox of Shaw Environmental.
There was no word on the magnitude, but Hecox reported that the quake didn't create any new bubbling in the 5-acre sinkhole area, nor did it have any effect on the collapsed cavern that lurks below, and caused the whole slurry mess.
Meanwhile, Assumption Parish officials billed cavern owners Texas Brine LLC for $321,000 to reimburse expenses. The state Department of Natural Resources also ordered the company to take a series of steps to stanch potential environmental hazards as a result of the sinkhole. Officials are concerned about the presence of natural gas in the area's ground water source. The failure of the cavern provided a "pathway" for oil and natural gas to the area's groundwater aquifer that had never previously existed, according to the state.
