Shooting Takes Life of Freshman Nursing StudentAnother bright life came to an end after a senseless shooting on Monday morning. 21-year-old Jeffery Washington was taken into custody Tuesday morning after shooting and killing 18-year-old Marguerite Washington, a freshman nursing student at Dillard University, and severely wounding her 19-year-old boyfriend, Justin Alexander. The shots came through their window while the couple slept at a home on the 7700 block of Branch Drive.
“This young woman who was murdered had never been in trouble with the law, had just graduated from high school and had just started as a freshman at a local university. This was a senseless crime that robbed a young person of a promising future,” says Superintendent Ronal Serpas in the press release.
Jeffery Washington, whose police record includes a domestic battery arrest, was apprehended at a friend’s house with the help of witnesses and a photo line up. Now, accused of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder, he faces a one million dollar bail and serious jail time.
Dillard Students honored Marguerite Washington, also a graduate of Eleanor McMain High School and crowned Queen of the Delta Sigma Theta Cotillion, with a candle light vigil on Monday. Dillard also paid tribute to her life on their college radio station. Shootings such as these beg the question, when will the violence stop? |
