NOPD: Cop Who Killed Gentilly Man Has Not Given Statement to Police

By Shay Sokol

As all eyes are on NOPD after Officer Joshua Colclough killed 20-year-old Wendell Allen while he was unarmed during a pot bust in a Gentilly house last Wedndsday, March 8, NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas continued the slow trickle of information about the incident tonight. As a part of the “completely transparent” ongoing investigation both Serpas and Mayor Landrieu promised, today's update says NOPD has been unable to obtain a voluntary statement from Officer Colclough, who fired his service weapon one time, fatally wounding Wendell Allen.

Instead of giving a statement, Officer Colclough has hired a lawyer, according to a NOPD statement issued Tuesday night.

“Criminal investigators have contacted his attorney for several days to ask the officer to make a statement, but his attorney has not made Officer Colclough available to do so,” an NOPD statement released today says.

“If the officer were forced to give a statement to police, that statement could not be used against him in a criminal case, if it became necessary to do so.  We will continue to work to get a voluntary statement from Officer Colclough, but a thorough investigation will be completed with or without it,” Serpas said.

As Public Integrity Bureau’s protocol dictates, following the shooting, Officer Colclough was immediately reassigned to desk duty.
