Scalise Wins Whip Vote

3:15 p.m.: Congressional Republicans voted U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Metairie) in as House Majority Whip on Thursday afternoon, according to the Washington Post. Scalise won third-highest leadership spot in the House on the first ballot, continuing the conservative Republican's quick rise through party leadership posts. Scalise played "Eye of the Tiger" in a Congressional conference room to pump up supporters before the vote, the Post reports.

12 p.m.: In the race for whip, Steve Scalise is trading the leather for the pine. Channeling the Saints' 2010 playoff run, the Metairie-based Congressman broke out the bats in the final hours of his three-way race to become the U.S. House of Representatives' majority whip, Politico reports.

Scalise, a conservative Republican, emerged as a favorite for the whip seat last week in the wake of the the leadership shakeup that followed Majority Leader Eric Cantor's stunning primary defeat. On Thursday, fellow GOP reps will vote on a ballot that includes Scalise, Marlin Stutzman of Indiana and Peter Roskam of Illinois. The vote will could take multiple ballots.

According to Politico, Scalise gave his whip campaign team bats on Wednesday that said "Bring the Wood" as motivation to push for the win.

Though the Beltway hot sheet didn't reference it, Scalise was clearly channeling Coach Sean Payton, who handed out similar bats to the Saints in 2010 before a playoff showdown with the Arizona Cardinals.

As WhoDats may remember, Reggie Bush got so attached to the bat that he wouldn't put it down. Then, he turned in one of his best performances in the Black and Gold.

The Whip vote is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
