Saints Players Re-Suspended by Goodell for Bounty Scandal

Bountygate ain't over yet, Saints fans. The Black and Gold players who were punished, then unpunished for their alleged roles in Bountygate will have to serve time away from the team after all, according to a statement issued by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Current Saints linebacker Jon Vilma, who is currently out with an injury, and defensive lineman Will Smith will have to serve their suspensions, as will former Saints Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove, the site reports.

Vilma was banished for the year, though the new ruling states he will be able to retain his salary for the first part of the year. Smith was suspended for four games.

In a letter, Goodell told Vilma:

"At our meeting, you confirmed that cart-offs and knockouts were part of a broader program in place among the Saints' defensive players. You confirmed that these terms referred to plays in which an opposing player has to leave the game for one or more plays. You confirmed that, as Coach Vitt testified, an opposing player's need for smelling salts under a trainer's care was a consequence of the kind that the program sought to achieve and for which players were offered cash rewards from the incentive pool. I also find that you engaged in conduct detrimental by offering a substantial financial incentive to any member of the defensive unit who knocked Brett Favre out of the Saints' 2009 NFC playoff game against the Vikings.

Vilma has been locked in legal battles with the league, including a defamation lawsuit against Goodell.

In the new ruling, Fujita saw his suspension cut from three games to one. Hargrove, who is currently a free agent, saw his penalty cut from eight games to seven.

An appeals panel overturned the suspensions just before the season started in September. But the panel gave Goodell the right to re-enter the discipline if he could prove that the players showed intent to injure other players as part of the pay-for-play scheme. Whether by design or not, looks like he's chosen the Saints bye-week - and the week after their first win - to re-announce the suspensions.
