ChazFest Brings out the Russians, Riff Raff

by Brad Rhines

Jazz Fest offers plenty of fun in the sun for weekend warriors, but for daytime drinking and midweek music, you’ll have to head to the Bywater.  The 7th annual Chaz Fest happens on Wednesday, May 2, and was originally devised as an alternative to the big show at the Fairgrounds.  Intended as a venue for local artists who couldn’t get booked for Jazz Fest, Chaz Fest was started by Alex McMurray, who named the event after his friend and Tin Men bandmate, the beloved Washboard Chaz Leary.

Taking place at the Truck Farm on St. Claude Avenue, this year’s Chaz Fest includes at least one act that will also be playing the Fairgrounds, Hurray for the Riff Raff, along with bands like the Russian folk-punk act Debauche, cello player Helen Gillet, and, of course, the Tin Men.

Chaz Fest also promises “good food and hard liquor,” featuring BBQ sandwiches and sausages from the Joint and a hard liquor bar, along with plenty of other options for food and drink.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate.  For full details, check out Chaz Fest online.
