Right of Way: Rand Paul Backs Vitter for Gov'

While Louisiana’s Governor seems focused on the GOP’s presidential primary, one likely bold faced name in that election is turning his attention to Louisiana’s gubernatorial race. On Tuesday (2.10), Senator Rand Paul officially endorsed fellow senator David Vitter for the job.

The endorsement arrived in the form of an email from Vitter’s office to supporters. Paul wrote, “Throughout his time in the Senate, David Vitter has listened to the needs of the people of Louisiana and has been a strong advocate of Louisiana values. I know that he will continue to answer your needs as governor, and this is why I support him as a candidate for Governor of Louisiana.”

The text is heavy with references to the Tea Party and Libertarian causes that Paul built his reputation upon.  The Senator from Kentucky labels Vitter “a stalwart supporter of limited government, states’ rights, and the taxpayer’s best interest,” and explains that the duo’s friendship is rooted in these politics. “David and I immediately started working together on issues like balancing the budget, immigration and auditing the Federal Reserve.”

Vitter’s intent to leave the Senate and pursue the mansion in Baton Rouge has been long known and he comes to the race with a well-developed apparatus and an ample warchest. From the right, he has two known challengers: Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne and Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle. State Representative John Bel Edwards is the Democratic’s heir to the candidacy. Some have speculated about the potential of General Russel Honoré and NOLA’s own Mayor Mitch tossing their hats in the ring as well.
