The Return of the Long Lunch

If you’re looking for some sweet relief from the work week blues, look no further than Bywater watering hole Bacchanal. On Friday (8.4), the premiere spot to wine and dine al fresco offers New Orleanians a very worthwhile excuse to cut out of work and get the weekend started early with a midday feast with Wayward Owl Brewing Company.

Bacchanal’s Bar Manager Coy Bryant was first inspired to pair the two F&B forces upon visiting Wayward Owl in his neighborhood. “I’m really excited by the beer scene happening in New Orleans right now,” he said, and after sampling some of Wayward Owl’s brews, he continued, “Everything for the Beer Lunch just sort of fell into place.” Wayward Owl’s Chef Justin Boswell agreed, calling the collab a “no brainer.” He said of Bacchanal, “We love the people, the courtyard, the music, the ambiance, and the spread is always amazing.”

Today’s meal features four courses, each paired with a different brew. Attendees will get the feast started with mixed olives, spiced pecans and a Ruffle Your Beer Tail Feather cocktail. Round One pairs Brother Love’s Saison with grilled romaine, anchovy vinaigrette, shaved parmesan, and duck fat croutons, while Round Two sees grilled grape leaf wrapped shrimp, garlic, and citrus herbed butter served up with a Family Tree Kristallweizen. The lunch then moves on to Round Three, which will pair a Clean Slate IPA with crispy pork belly, caramelized onion and fennel, smoked carrot, labneh, cilantro, and cumin lime. Finishing off the meal will be a chocolate bark, sea salt and olive oil served with fresh berries, with a pint of Wayward Owl’s brown ale The Grind. Vegan options will also be available upon request.

Bacchanal’s Chef de Cuisine J.n Zink carefully built dishes to harmonize with Wayward Owl’s brews. “As a long-time advocate of sourcing regional, seasonal and, of course, quality ingredients, my approach to food is a natural complement to Bacchanal’s focused Mediterranean minimalism,” Zink explained. “I love beer, so when I had the pleasure of sampling the many offerings of Wayward Owl Brewery, brewed in the heart of New Orleans, I took the same approach. When you have quality ingredients, let them speak for themselves. I think people will be pleased with the fresh, summer menu designed to complement Wayward Owl’s craft micro-brews.”

The lunch runs for $35 per person, and kicks off at 1:30PM. Of course, no event in New Orleans is complete without a sweet soundtrack. Live music for today’s event will be provided by local jazz stars and Bacchanal regulars a Tangiers Combo. Indeed, there is no better way to start the weekend. As Boswell toasted, “Great beer and great food, it’s just meant to be.”
