Reports: John Georges to Buy The Advocate

The largest remaining daily newspaper in South Louisiana is set to have a new owner. According to multiple reports, New Orleans businessman John Georges signed a letter of intent to buy the Baton Rouge-based Advocate newspaper for an undisclosed sum that is said to be "way more" than the paper is worth.

Advocate owner David Manship confirmed the news in a press release, saying the family was "extremely happy" to be selling the newspaper to a new owner based in Louisiana.

Georges began negotations with The Advocate last year, and talks apparently picked up in the beginning of 2013. News of the potential buy leaked in January, with the identity of the mystery suitor eventually unveiled as Georges.

Georges owns his family's longtime grocery wholesale business, along with a host of other concerns including Galatoire's Restaurant.

The Advocate, which has a circulation of about 98,000, recently launched an aggressive ad campaign and new bureau following the TImes-Picayune's decision to focus on digital and scale back publication to three days per week. The New Orleans move, which included opening a new office and hiring many former T-Ps staffers, added about 20,000 to the Red Stick paper's circulation numbers.

A dollar value on the sale was not disclosed. Manship indicated that if the family were to sell the paper, the asking price would be for "way more" than it is worth. The final deal that will transfer the paper to Georges is expected to be completed by June 1.
