Jindal's Health Care, Prison Cuts Would Be Topic of Special Legislative Session Jerome "Dee" Richard One state lawmaker wants his colleagues to head up to Baton Rouge later this fall, and it's not to admire Mike the Tiger's new habitat. Rep. Jerome "Dee" Richard (I-Thibodaux) is circulating a petition for a special session of the legislature because a lot has happened since they've been away. Specifically, Richard wants to discuss Gov. Bobby Jindal's moves to cut healthcare funding, close a prison and privatize both areas.
The Jindal administration's cuts to health care and the LSU hospital system as a result of the state's Medicaid mess would be a major agenda point of the special session, according to the petition. The state lost $859 million in Medicaid payments after the 2012 legislative session ended in June. Since then, state officials have announced two rounds of big cuts to state health care funding. The most recent came yesterday, when LSU Hospitals cut 1,500 jobs - including 400 in New Orleans. Richard wants lawmakers want to have a say about those cuts.
In the wake of the slashing, officials have also said they plan to divert patients from state hospitals to private hospitals to make up for the lost space at the state facilities. The petition also calls for legislation focusing on the privatization.
Prison sales would also be a major topic of the special session. Jindal pushed for the privatization of certain prisons for the past two legislative sessions, but the legislation didn't go through. Late in September, Jindal announced the closure of the Dequincy state prison in Southwest Louisiana. When the move came down last week, some legislators said they weren't given a chance to weigh in on the closure, or find ways to prevent the closing.
Under state law, a majority of legislators have to sign the petition for the "extraordinary session" to be a reality. The petition calls for the session to begin Nov. 26, and end no later than Dec. 15. |
