Quintron and Miss Pussycat Announce New Album: Spellcaster II

After weeks of rumors, Ninth Ward soundshifters Quintron and Miss Pussycat have finally announced their new album: Spellcaster II: Death In Space, to be released October 28 through local garage label Pizza Burglar Records. Stream the first single “Death In Space” and check out the tour dates below.

For the new record, Quintron added the lap steel to his usual one-man lineup of organ, Drum Buddy, and guitar. He also invented something called a “weather warlock,” said to “use sunlight, rainfall, wind speed, and temperature to affect a constant chordal drone.”

Drone isn’t far off the mark. From what we’ve heard so far, Spellcaster II brings a new dimension to “swamp tech” with sludgy, lurking murmurs and ominous melodies less suitable for a dance-off than for nodding off.

Part of the new album will double as a soundtrack to Mizra the Miraculous, a forthcoming short sci-fi film from New Orleans filmmaker Brent Joseph. Joseph raised over $12,000 in support of the project with a Kickstarter campaign last fall.

Longtime fans will recognize both the title and the cover art theme of Spellcaster II from an early Quintron album, The Amazing Spellcaster, released in 1997. Local printshop Fitzgerald Letterpress created the covers for the new album, with additional spray painting at the real Spellcaster Lodge on St. Claude.

Q and Miss P also announced a fall tour that will take them through the eastern half the US and into Canada—with, of course, the customary Halloween night performance at One Eyed Jacks. Voodoo Music Experience attendees can also catch them at the festival on November 2. Spazzy local pysch-rockers BABES will join the duo for a string of Midwest dates after that.

Check out the brooding first single “Death In Space” (which premiered at Noisey this morning):
