Pulp Party: Bukowski's Birthday Bash

The International House will be hosting a birthday tribute for Charles Bukowski tonight, from 8p.m. to 11p.m. (Bukowski’s actual birthday was August 16th, 1920.)  The event will mimic the style of a writers’ salon, with poetry readings, an open mic, 7’installation art, food and drinks.

Charles Bukowski famously penned the folwoing words in "Young in New Orleans."

“being lost,

being crazy maybe

is not so bad

if you can be

that way

New Orleans gave me

Bukowski made only one trip to New Orleans, but the Crescent City made a huge impression on him (and helped reinvigorate his writing career.) New Orleans locals Jon and Louise Webb got Bukowski published in The Outsider. They also carry the distinction of publishing two of his first books, It Catches My Heart in its Hands and Crucifix in a Deathhand. Even after Bukowksi left the city, his column “Notes of a Dirty Old Man,” was picked up by NOLA Express

Specials guests will be in attendance including publisher and collector Edwin Blair, Bohemian author Jeff Weddle, Surregional Press poet and publisher Dennis Formento, Chris Rose, poet Chuck Perkins and many more.

Of course, the evening will include stiff spirits drinks, ham on rye sandwiches, San Pedro Food truck and “barfly” music. A seven foot collage of Bukowski letters will be presented, as well as photographs and lore by Jordan Qualls and Britney Penouilh. On top of that, early editions of It Catches My Heart in its Hands and Crucifix in a Deathhand will be made available.
