Pilot Dies in Gulf Helicopter Crash

A helicopter transporting offshore workers crashed in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Plaquemines Parish on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The helicopter's pilot died in the crash, according to the Wood Group, the energy services company that contracted the flight.

Three Wood Group employees who were onboard the helicopter survived the crash. After being rescued from the crash site by the Coast Guard, two of the passengers were being treated for injuries, while a third was uninjured.

The pilot, who was a contract employee of the company, was not immediately identified.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the survivors, their families and the family of a contracted pilot following an early morning helicopter incident off the coast of Louisiana," a statement from the Wood Group said.

The Coast Guard received reports of the crash, which occurred about 30 miles from Venice, just before 7:30 a.m. The crew of a nearby offshore supply boat retrieved the passengers, and they were later airlifted from the site by Acadian Ambulance and a Coast Guard rescue chopper.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to the Coast Guard.
