Pilfered Pod: Gators Returned After Theft at Zoo

by Shay Sokol

A congregation of baby gators were sprung from the zoo last week, but their trip out of the tank was cut short after the thieves dumped the reptiles in the Irish Chanel. On Independence Day, the Audubon Zoo Swamp Gift Shop was broken into and 10 baby alligators were stolen from their tank, New Orleans police said. The next day, a woman saw two men get out of a car and drop a plastic storage bin containing 8 baby alligators outside her home on the corner of Soraparu and Rousseau Streets in the Irish Chanel.

That evening, Jefferson Parish deputies stopped a stolen vehicle and found one baby alligator inside. The vehicle matched a witness’ description of the car driven by the two men whom abandoned the 8 baby alligators earlier that day. The witness then identified the two men in the stolen vehicle – Rodney Thornton, 29, and Kawayne Powell, 20. They were apprehended, and another baby alligator was located in the vehicle. Yesterday, a warrant was issued for their arrest, charging them with Relative to Possession of Stolen Property.

As of this writing, neither suspect appears in Orleans nor Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Offices’ inmate database.

The NOPD was unable to confirm if the tenth baby alligator was found or returned with the other nine back to their tank in the Audubon Zoo Swamp Gift Shop. The motive, whether it was a liberation of reptiles on Independence Day or a heist to grill something nice, is still under investigation.
