Defender Picks

Payton's Pay Day

As promised, Sean Payton is with New Orleans for the long haul. On Wednesday (3.23), the Saints head coach announced that negotiations are complete on his new contract.

The new deal is reported to be worth 45 million dollars through 2020 according to ESPN. Those numbers land in the top tier of coaching salaries. Once signed, the contract will replace Payton’s current 8.5 million dollar annual pay which originally ran through 2017.

At a presser this morning, an uncharacteristically relaxed Payton repeated his intention to finish his career with the Black n’ Gold. “You kind of feel like there's so much of you in there. I don't see myself working anywhere else,” gushed Payton.

The deal is a little off norm as the Saint have posted losing records for the past two season. The situation is not lost on the coach.

“We've got to be better at the end of games, that's for sure,” Payton said. “We finish and in the last two years we lost some games, lost a number of them in the last five minutes of the game. Defensively, Dennis [Allen] and his staff, they've got their hands full. I think they'll add the right pieces.”

Payton also mentioned that Drew Brees is on the verge of an extension also.
