Pax Chewbacchus: Nerds Unite as Sci-Fi, Fantasy Krewes Announce Accord

by Brad Rhines

Peace has come to the galaxy at last. NoDef recently reported on the rift among the city’s nerds, as the Mystic Krewe of PUEWC prepared to protest outside of Chewbacchus’s annual Alien Beach Party this past weekend, demanding that New Orleans’ premier sci-fi carnival krewe expand their membership to representatives of horror and fantasy genres. While Chewbacchus Overlord Ryan Ballard initially told NoDef that “this aggression shall not stand,” an accord was struck Saturday night and a treaty of sorts was announced from the stage at Tipitina’s.

On Saturday, the scene outside of Tipitina’s was tempestuous, as wizards, warlocks, and unicorns brandished signs and even roasted a headless wookie on a spit in effigy. One sign sported the slogan “Elves Are (Almost) People Too,” making clear that this issue was one of civil rights. The Krewe of PUEWC—which stand for “People for the inclusion of Unicorns, Elves and Whinebots in Chewbacchus” and is pronounced like “puke”—stormed the venue to chants of “PUEWC is Rising!” but they were received peacefully by the ruling members of Chewbacchus.

“No geek shall be excluded,” announced the Chewbacchus Overlord, proposing a toast. “All hail the Sacred Drunken Wookie, whose arms are big enough to hold all of us!”

Both Chewbacchus and PUEWC reached out to NoDef this week with statements on the so-called Pax Chewbacchus.

According to the release from the Krewe of Chewbacchus, “Now ALL manner of Fandom and Geekery has a seat at the table of the Sacred Drunken Wookiee. Unicorns, Elves, Faeries, Potterheads, Were-beasties, Vampires, Zombies and all the rest of the supernatural and magical creatures in the universe can now join in the fun. Fantasy, Horror, and Anime fans are all welcome to roll in the Chewbacchus Parade under the mighty banner of the Mystic Krewe of P.U.E.W.C .”

The Krewe of PUEWC responded in kind, with Merlinton the Wizagator telling NoDef, “PUEWC raises our glittery horns in gratitude to the Sacred Drunken Wookie, the Overlords and all the good nerds of Chewbacchus.  We look forward to working with our furry friends to redefine crazy, satire and fun for ALL!”
