Party People

Louisiana’s favorite husband-and-wife comedy routine received a big shakeup on Thursday (5.06). Mary Matalin announced that she is no longer a member of the Republican Party, but did not commit to a position on presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.

In an interview on Bloomberg Politics' "With All Due Respect,” she explained, “Because I'm a Republican in the Jeffersonian, Madisonian sense. I’m not a Republican for party or a person, and the Libertarian Party represents — continues to represent — those constitutional principles that I agree with.”

When the inevitable issue of The Donald was raised, the political strategist was less committal. "I like that he had the gall to put macro messaging over micro targeting, and I like what I know about his economic policy," she told co-host Mark Halperin. "I just don't know enough. I think he could not only win, he would win in [a] landslide if he could stop his high school boy antics with women."

Matalin was adamant about her “Never Hillary” bonafides. “I said ‘I'm provisional.’ I'm a provisional Trumpster. I don't know enough about Trump. I know, like, three things about his economic policy. We know everything we need know about Hillary.”

Of course, Matalin is famously married to Democratic politico. Early in their careers, she played a key role in Bush 41’s election and then Carville played a key role in Bill Clinton’s subsequent defeat of Bush. In later years, the couple devoted much of their time to supporting New Orleans and appearing at speaking engagements like their 2012 push for the “Cocktail Party.”

When asked if her hubby also had plans for a party switch, Matalin laughed. “I think it would be a juicy story for me and it would contribute mightily to marital tranquility, I’ll say.”
