Parade Planner: Oshun, Cleopatra

Details, Routes, & Weather for Tonight's Parades

Krewe du Vieux kicked off Carnival in the French Quarter and Marigny last weekend, but the big floats roll down the Avenue tonight. It is the first Friday of Mardi Gras, and the Krewe of Oshun begins at Perrier and Napoleon Avenue, then rolls down St. Charles to Canal Street. The Krewe of Cleopatra follows behind.

The weather tonight looks ideal for Carnival. Forecasts call for mild cloud cover with daytime temperatures peaking close to 70 degree, and a drop only into the 50's overnight, Chances of rain are minimal.

In 2016, Oshun will be ecelebrating her 20th anniversary to start the season.  Expect 20 floats and over 50 units overall. Oshun is an African-American krewe whose name comes from the name of a Yoruba goddess, believed to represent love, intimacy, beauty, and wealth.

Following Oshun at 6:30p.m., the all-female Krewe of Cleopatra will roll 20 floats. 2016’s theme is “Cleopatra Rocks the Big Easy!"

Two sisters started Cleopatra in 1972.  Having been enjoying parades their entire lives as native New Orleanians, the two women decided they wanted to start their own organization and contacted a friend at Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World, who encouraged them to form the krewe. Once they received the go-ahead from the mayor of Gretna and the proper authorities in Orleans Parish, Cleopatra was born. The group paraded for 39 years (with one off after Katrina) on the West Bank before moving to the traditional uptown route in 2014.
