Overnight Crime Report: Three Aggravated Batteries, Two Robberies, Attempted Theft, Homicide

On Wednesday (3.1), the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) responded to three cases of aggravated battery (two by cutting, one by shooting), one armed robbery, one attempted armed robbery, a simple robbery, and one homicide according to the Major Offense Log (MOL).

At 12:42PM, a 77-year-old man was walking on the 7600 block of Earhart Avenue when he was approached by four juveniles. Police said that one of the juveniles demanded money, and then shot the man in the arm with a pellet gun upon refusal. The man pulled mace out of his pocket, and the four young men then fled the scene, according to police.

According to the MOL, 51-year-old Edward Long was in an argument with an unknown male when a 62-year-old man arrived on the scene. Long then stabbed the man “for unknown reason,” reported detectives. The condition of the victim is not listed.

Detectives reported that a 34-year-old man was stabbed in the buttocks, shoulder, and left thigh at 3:36PM on the 1200 block of S. Saratoga Street. The altercation followed an accusation of theft made by the perpetrator.

At 4:24PM, a 75-year-old woman was walking into her house on the 800 block of Marigny Street when an armed gunman approached her, according to the Department. The MOL described the perp pulling a gun on the victim and then taking her wallet. Detective said that the man was later apprehended.

A 16-year-old boy was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the 1200 block of N. Broad St at around 8:00PM. The NOPD did not add whether any suspects have been identified in their investigation, but the victim is listed in guarded condition.

31-year-old James Dawson was arrested for Simple Robbery after an alleged verbal altercation with a 20-year-old male turned physical. Police stated that around 12:30AM, Dawson and the other man got into a fight on the 700 block of Canal Street. During the altercation, the 20-year-old man dropped his phone, which Dawson then picked up before leaving the scene. When he returned to the location, he was arrested on site.

Police reported that following a call for service of shots being fired in the 4600 block of Rhodes Avenue, a man was shot around 1:57AM. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. The MOL did not record where a suspect has been identified.
