Oil Sheen Mystery Plot Thickens as Robot Voyage Yields Few Clues Look sir, Droid In the Gulf, sheen appears once again to be winning - at least for now. BP's underwater robots recently completed their latest mission back to the bottom of the Gulf, and this time they came up empty. The ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) were looking for the source of the latest mystery oil sheen that has persistently hovering about the wreckage of the Deepwater Horizon since November, but found nothing on their expedition, which ended Saturday.
The ROVs inspected the sealed-in wellhead that leaked an unprecendented volume of oil into the Gulf in 2010, as well as the wreckage of the rig and discarded equipment that was used in failed attempts to cap the well.
“No apparent source of the surface sheen has been discovered by this effort,” said Capt. Duke Walker, Federal On-Scene Coordinator for Deepwater Horizon. “Next steps are being considered as we await the lab results of the surface and subsurface samples and more detailed analysis of the video shot during the mission."
While they didn't find oil, the ROVs discovered an unknown substance that is not crude emanating from the wreckage.
BP and the Coast Guard thought they had the latest seepage plugged when they sealed a leaky dome at the bottom of the Gulf floor in October. But the sheen has persisted, though authorities have not released the size of the oil slick.
The feds will continue to monitor the sheen through satellite imagery.
