Occupy No MoreAfter 2 Months, City Sends in the Cops to Shut Down Duncan Plaza ProtestUpdated 2:49 p.m CBD - In the early morning hours before Occupy NOLA was set go to court to save their Duncan Plaza encampment, the Mayor sent in the blue.
After barricades and floodlights were set up around the camp at 3:30 a.m. Tues., (Dec. 6), about 100 NOPD officers surrounded the borders of the two-month old outgrowth of Occupy Wall Street. At 4:30a.m., police entered the camp to announce a 30-minute warning before the eviction, and that any homeless persons can go to the northeast corner of the camp to receive assistance.
Police were dressed in their blues instead of riot gear, nor did they need to deploy any of the tear gas and pepper spray that has marred the eviction of other Occupy groups around the country.
As the police moved in, protestors began to remove their valuables from the camp, and scattered from the Duncan Plaza grounds. Tents remained on the property for the next few hours. Around 5 a.m., NOPD officers gathered in a long wall formation and moved from the east side of camp towards City Hall, clearing the camp of all remaining persons. About a half hour later, a group of student lawyers from the Tulane Law Clinic, headed by Davida Finger, were also forced to leave the camp. The gaggle claimed they were promised by NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas that they were allowed to remain inside the barricades as observers. Finger will give an oral argument at today’s hearing. Initially, one of the law students told NoDef there were two arrests at the Plaza. Later, NOPD and the law students confirmed that only Robert Riche, 31, was booked for violating a law that prohibits erecting "signs, sheds, etc." on public property.
At 5:58 a.m., most of the structures in the camp were still standing as dump trucks came around the corner, followed by three trucks of labor hands to clear the remaining tents. By 6 a.m. – when the open park hours begin – NOPD opened the barricade for the dump trucks to enter the park to begin cleaning, but would not allow protestors back in. In response, protesters heckled the police officers. One young woman yelled at NOPD officers for acting like “the short kid beating up a midget.”
In human microphone, the protestors chanted, “Show me what the police state looks like. This is what the police state looks like.” By 6:15a.m., the camp was nearly entirely cleared of tents and remaining belongings.
The eviction makes good on statements Mayor Mitch made Friday that the Occupation's "time has come." Over the weekend, many protesters stood their ground as the cops passed out courtesy notices that encouraged campers to protest during the park's normal business hours of 6 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.
Since the Oct. 6 march from Tulane Ave. that heralded the beginning of the movement, the encampment struggled with crime and splinter groups within its ranks. But as eviction loomed and Jesse Jackson stopped by, the protesters began to re-unite.The homeless people who took residence at the Plaza were once blamed for theft from the Plaza's food stash. But over the weekend, talk turned to insuring they were given proper services.
Though the city has taken decisive action, the protesters remain scheduled to take a final shot at saving their encampment. A hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. today on an injunction to block the eviction. ’)

It's about time they moved
It's about time they moved out this pretend protest shanty town. These are nothing more than delusional misfits and glorified gutter punks and should head back home to occupy their trust funds.
