Obama, Morials Loom Large at National Urban League Conferenceby E.J. Ruane Starting today with a visit from the President of these United States, the National Urban League is holding the election year edition of its annual conference in New Orleans. From July 25-28, the Ernest Morial Convention Center will hold workshops, panels and other events to promote the Urban League mission. It also happens to be a Morial meetup. Former N.O. mayor Marc Morial is the president of the National Urban League, and the conference is being held in the building named after his father, who was the first black mayor of New Orleans: the Ernest "Dutch" Morial Convention Center.
For three and a half days, Occupy the Vote: Employment and Education. Empower the Nation, will provide workshops, panels and networking events. There will even be a concert featuring Chaka Khan and Doug E. Fresh.
Since the early 1900s, the National Urban League has strived to "enable African Americans to secure economic self reliance, parity, power and civil rights." This year's conference entitled "Occupy the Vote: Employment and Education. Empower the Nation" will focus primarily on promoting excellence in academics and equity regarding voting rights. Voter issues are especially pertinent now given the recent voter ID law dispute. With the 2012 presidential election around the corner, the Justice Department is investigating Pennsylvania laws that require voters to show photo ID at the polls for violating the Voting Rights Act. Republicans argue the laws are required to protect against voter fraud.
Today, President Obama's address is the highlighted event for the conference. After attending an afternoon fundraiser at the House of Blues, the prez is expected to speak at 6 p.m. in his third address to the Urban League. GOP candidate Mitt Romney was invited to speak, but declined to make an appearance.
Visit the conference website for specific events and check back in with Nola Defender for updates.
