Obama Katrina Comments at Center of 'New,' 'Race' Video Since having a hurricane fall on the anniversary of K wasn't enough, conservative pundits have once again invoked the spectre of The Storm and the Federal Flood. The method this time was through a 2007 video of President Barack Obama that a lot of people already saw during the 2008 campaign. In the speech to a group of ministers, Obama says the feds didn't waive the Stafford Act after the 2005 levee failures, contributing to the slow response and wayward recovery.
Sounding very preacherly himself, Obama tells the crowd that the Stafford Act wasn't pushed aside for K, but was for 9-11 and Hurricane Andrew.
"What's happening down in New Orleans? Where's your dollar? Where's your Stafford Act money? Makes no sense. Tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out," he says in the video. "Tells me that somehow the people down in New Orleans, they don't care about as much."
Though the Romney campaign doesn't seem all that inspired to push the video, it's getting attention - and being touted as Obama's "other race speech" thanks to the likes of conservative media mavens like Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Matt Drudge's infamous Drudge Report. This class of people also now includes former FEMA director and heckuvajob doer Michael Brown. Brown hosts a radio talk show in Colorado, and he chimed in on cue to Politico today to argue that the feds did waive the Stafford Act after the Federal Flood.
“I call total BS on the President’s comments about Katrina,” Brownie said to the Beltway site. “He needs to get his facts straight and stop playing the race card with Katrina.”
