NOPD Detective Admits Stealing From Homeless Program

A New Orleans police detective pled guilty Friday to bilking a non-profit program that was supposed to house the homeless, according to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office. Tiwana Alexander, 36, resigned her job with the NOPD's Fourth District a day before admitting to the conspiracy to steal federal money in court.

Over a year period 2007 and 2008, Alexander received $2,700 from the House of Ruth to help pay for a deposit and rent on an apartment, even though she was not homeless, Letten's office found. The non-profit organization receives money from the federal Housing and Urban Development department to assist homeless people get on their feet with housing and training. Money from the program that Alexander bilked goes to pay for a deposit and 1-3 months of rent on an apartment.

Alexander received the funds via House of Ruth case manager Samantha Cornelius, who was also named in the conspiracy. Checks were made out to phony landlords, then deposited into Alexander's account.

According to court documents, Alexander purchased her own home in 2007.

Alexander faces up to five years in prison, a maximum $250,000 fine, restitution and three years supervised release following any jail term.
