NOPD Officer Jason Giroir Resigns Over Trayvon Martin Comment

By Shay Sokol

At 3 p.m. today, Officer Jason Giroir – the man behind the “thug” comment - resigned after Public Integrity Bureau Chief Arlinda Westbrook notified him that allegations of misconduct against him stuck, and that NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas called for a pre-termination hearing for Giroir. Giroir posted the online comment on referring to Trayvon Martin. “Act like a Thug Die like one!” he wrote Sunday.

Superintendent Serpas said in a statement today, “From the moment I was informed yesterday afternoon that Jason Giroir admitted to PIB investigators that he did write the offensive comments on the news station’s website, I immediately questioned his abilities to continue as a New Orleans police officer.  My responsibility to the people of New Orleans, as well as to the professional officers on this police force, demanded I take swift action in this matter.  I have accepted Giroir’s resignation, and believe it is in the best interest of this department and this city”.

17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed late February by a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, in Sanford, Florida.

After hearing that Giroir admitted he posted the remarks yesterday, Chief Serpas immediately suspended him indefinitely from the NOPD without pay. Officer Giroir was also involved in a traffic stop turned gun battle, where 20-years-old Justin Sipp was killed, and two other civil rights cases in the past.

Giroir was found to have violated the following NOPD regulations:

Rule 3- Professional Conduct- Paragraph 1- Professionalism; Rule 3 - Professional Conduct- Paragraph 13- Social Networking Websites, Facebook, Myspace, Print or Transmitted Media, Etc.; Rule 4- Performance of Duty- Paragraph 2- Instructions from an Authoritative Source to wit Chapter 22.12 (2c).

After the misbehavior of the cops during Katrina, it was to be hoped that the NOPD would make an effort to "protect and serve," as is their mandate. It is sad to see that they have resumed their old pattern.
