NOPD Officer Charged with Manslaughter in Shooting Death of Unarmed ManThe New Orleans police officer that allegedly shot and killed an unarmed man in Gentilly during a March incident was indicted Thursday. Joshua Colclough was charged with manslaughter by the Orleans Parish DA in the killing of Wendell Allen in his home on March 7. He reportedly turned himself in Friday.
Colclough is accused of firing a single shot into Allen's chest while executing a search warrant of the 20-year-old's Prentiss Street home. The warrant was obtained because of information that people were selling drugs at the house, according to police. Allen was standing at the top of the stairs in the two-story house, and did not have a gun, police said.
According to court documents, Colclough's attorney appeared in court alone Friday to ask for reduced bond in the case, which is currently set at $300,000. A hearing is set for Monday to iron out the bond issues, court documents state.
NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas issued a statement Thursday saying that Colclough is now on emergency suspension without pay, and further action will be taken pending the outcome of the criminal case. Serpas praised the investigation into the incident that was conducted by NOPD as fair and thorough. |
