NOPD Lieutenant Dies in Mississippi Car AccidentNew Orleans police are mourning the death of one of their own today. Christopher Cambiotti, an NOPD lieutenant with the First District who was well-liked among the ranks of the Department, was killed in a two-car crash on Interstate 49 in Hattiesburg, Miss., Saturday evening, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol and New Orleans police. Cambiotti, 42, was ejected from the passenger's seat of a 1970 MG Midget sports car, according to Cpl. Todd Miller of the Missisippi Highway Patrol.
A Mercury Mountaineer's front right bumpber struck the Midget's left rear bumper. The collision caused the Midget to run off the road, and overturn. The Midget was being driven by Thomas Daughbrill, 42, according to the Highway Patrol. Cambiotti was prounounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to NOPD.
Cambiotti joined New Orleans police in 1997, working for the Second, Third, Fifth, Sixth and Eighth Districts, as well as a brief stint in the Special Operations Division. For the last five years, he was second in command to First District Commander Bobby Norton.
“This is a great loss for me, both professionally and personally.," Norton said in a statement. "This is also a true loss for our community. Chris was a dedicated officer who cared for and respected this community very much.”
Chief Ronal Serpas called Cambiotti "a great person, as well as an exemplary police officer."
"He always had something positive to say, and he always had a smile on his face," Serpas said. “Chris was very popular with the officers and made tremendous contributions to this police department, as well as to the people of New Orleans. He will be sorely missed.”
A memorial service for Cambiotti will be held at St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. Arrangements have not yet been finalized. |
